Mackinac Bridge
This is the third biggest suspension bridge in the world at a length of 8,038 meters. The architect of this bridge was Dr. David B. Steinman who directed the construction of the bridge which started in the year 1054 and opened to the public in 1958.People using this bridge are charged a certain amount of money.
Navajo Bridge
Located in Arizona, this bridge crosses the Colorado River and is almost 250 meters long. The construction of this bridge started in the year 1927, ending two years later, costing $390,000.In the 1990s a second bridge was built which was opened to the public in 1994.The first bridge is now used only by pedestrians.

I sat with my cat Sadie curled on my lap and looked out the window at the crashing waves. The heavy rain beat against my lighthouse like a thousand footsteps racing up and down the walls. I held Sadie closer, and she let out a small meow of displeasure. I knew that the coming storm could not be too dangerous if Sadie was still acting normally. I had read that animals can sense changes in weather and will seek shelter from a tornado or hurricane. I was relying on Sadie’s calmness to get me through my first hurricane on the island.
I knew that my lighthouse was sturdily built. It had survived more than one hundred years’ worth of hurricanes and tropical storms. There was no reason to believe that it couldn’t survive another. I looked up at the staircase that spiraled above me and worried as I felt the tower sway slightly in a gust of wind.
Paloma stopped and reread what she had just written. She smiled to herself in delight, saved her story, and then settled into her chair to continue writing. （河北省衡水中学2018届高三九模）Over a hundred years ago in 1911, something strange was found in the glaciers of Antarctica. Crilffith Taylor--an Australian geologist, had discovered a blood red stream pouring out of the ice cascades (瀑布) of Talor Glacier! Popularly known as the Blood Falls, scientists had not been able to find the reason behind the blood red liquid flowing through the ice---until recently. The mystery of the Blood Falls had finally been solved.
When these falls were first discovered, scientists had believed that the red colour came from a large amount of red algae (海藻) concentrated in the water. Red algae contain a pigment (色素) which reflects red light, making the algae appear red.
This theory made sense, until it was later found that algae do not play a part in the red color of the flowing liquid at all. What realty causes Talor Glacier’s waters appear blood red, is the presence of iron oxide in the liquid. The waters of the blood falls arc rich in salt and iron content, and when this water comes in contact with the air, it turns redjust like rust! The water in these falls is often referred to as brine by scientists because of the high salt content in the water.
This reasoning behind the red colors of the falls was found back in 2003. However, the entire mystery had not yet been solved. How is it then, that the Blood Falls are not frozen?
Researchers at the University of Colorado and University of Alaska found that inside the glacier, there was a network of channels and reservoirs that move the water around. Salt water has a lower freezing temperature. In addition, when any substance undergoes a change in state, it gives off heat. Therefore, the brine actually warm itself up while it’s freezing! How this works, is that when the brine is flowing through the Talor Glacier, some of it does freeze. As a result of changing state from liquid to ice, the brine gives off heat. This heat is enough to keep the rest of the brine in liquid form, which is why it flows out of the glacier.

Legend has it that the performing arts began when a Greek singer named Thespis invented tragedy. In 534 B.C., Thespis was performing a hymn（赞美诗）to the god Dionysius. Such hymns, called dithyrambs, were usually sung by a lead singer and a chorus. Thespis added a speaking actor. Performances at the annual Dionysian festival soon included plays with three actors as well as the standard hymns. By 449 B.C., the Greeks were giving prizes to the best actor and the best playwright at the festival. A modern word for actorthespian recognizes the debt today's drama owes to Thespis.
Performing in a Greek play required physical strength. Because each play had only three actors, performers had to play several roles. Chorus members both sang and danced. Being in the chorus for the many performances given at a festival was said to be as demanding as competing in the Olympic Games.
The Theater of Dionysius in Athens could hold 20,000 people. Even those in the front rows were quite a distance from the actors. Performers used grand gestures and wore masks so that they could be seen by everyone in their huge audience. Tragic（悲剧的）actors wore long clothes and masks. Comic actors wore short costumes that let them move freely and masks designed to make them look ugly or silly. Sometimes the chorus were dressed up to look like animals.
Another legacy（遗产）of the ancient Greeks is the deus ex machina, or "god from the machine". If a playwright was having trouble with the plot, he might have a god appear through a trap door（天窗）.The god would rescue the main character and find a solution to any difficult plot situations. Modem writers might not call on gods, but they do sometimes use unlikely ways to end a story. A character or an event that brings a complicated plot to an unlikely conclusion is still called deus ex machina.
